Praise for APPP Learning Week in Accra, Ghana - 26 to 30 April 2010

"APPP research helping to develop capacity of CDD staff" says Prof. Gyimah-Boadi

The Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Prof. Gyimah-Boadi, has observed that the Africa Power and Politics Programme (APPP) is helping to sharpen the skills of staff of the Center.

Apart from generating interesting work for the Center, he said, the APP programme is helping to build, broaden and deepen the Center’s knowledge about society through the programme’s combined use of a variety of research methods.  He said APPP is undertaking qualitative and ethnographic studies, areas in which the Center needs to strengthen its capacities.

Prof Gyimah-Boadi said this during an international workshop organised by APPP and hosted by CDD in Accra between 26 and 30 April 2010. The workshop brought together researchers from Rwanda, Uganda, Senegal, the UK and Ghana. Dubbed “APPP Learning Week,” the workshop provided a platform for participants to share ideas and consolidate understanding about the APPP’s overall research questions and the way its different research streams are helping to answer them.  It also provided a forum for the exchange of ideas, principles and experiences about the programme’s research methods, in addition to helping participants effectively communicate research results to different kinds of academic and policy audiences.

In a statement, Prof David Booth, Director of the APPP, said CDD-Ghana’s intellectual leadership role in Africa makes the Center an important member of the research consortium. He said the programme hopes to generate good strategic ideas of interest to policy makers, donors, governments, researchers and development partners.

The Africa Power and Politics Programme is a five-year programme of research, training and policy debate managed by a consortium of research institutions in Ghana, Niger, Uganda, France, UK, and the US.   The programme is seeking to discover better ways of organizing governance for development in sub-Saharan Africa, drawing on the best of Africa’s own experiences.
