APPP design workshop

The APPP concluded its first phase of work with a Design Workshop attended by 23 programme associates and advisers in Cape Town between 14 and 6 May 2008. The meeting had two major items on its agenda:
- discussion of the conceptual and methodological think-pieces prepared during the programme's design phase (see Publications); and
- review of short proposals for research in ten thematic areas of potential relevance to the programme.
The meeting identified a set of basic notions from the think-pieces that will form the common currency of research within the programme, as well as some clear areas of disagreement which we will continue to explore in and through the research. A number of topics were identified for further think-piece treatment.
The review of thematic proposals produced a short-list of topics to be treated as priorities for funding in the next phase of the programme, and identified others for reconsideration in a year's time. The short-listed topics (see Emerging Themes) will be considered in more detail and matched with the programme's resource constraints in September 2008. Meanwhile, exploratory research and scoping exercises are continuing on a number of the themes.

APPP: Atelier de recherche

La première phase de conception du programme ‘Pouvoir et Politique en Afrique’ s’est clôturée par un atelier de recherche qui a eu lieu à Cape Town du 14 au 16 Mai 2008 et qui a vu la participation de 23 chercheurs et conseillers scientifiques associés au programme. La rencontre s’est articulée autour de deux thèmes:
- la discussion conceptuelle et méthodologique des ‘think-pieces’ élaborés durant la phase de conception du programme (voir Publications); et
- la revue des propositions de recherche dans dix domaines thématiques potentiellement pertinents pour le programme.
La rencontre a permis d’identifier, à partir des think-pieces, un ensemble de notions pouvant constituer un cadre de recherche commun au sein du programme, mais elle a aussi fait ressortir clairement quelques points de désaccord, dont on débattra tout au long du processus de recherche. Les discussions ont fait également émerger de nouveaux thèmes à approfondir dans des think-pieces à venir.
L’examen des propositions thématiques a permis d’établir une liste de sujets dont le financement est prioritaire pour la prochaine phase du programme, tandis que d’autres sujets de recherche seront réexaminés dans une année. La liste des sujets sélectionnés (voir Thèmes émergeants) sera examinée de façon plus détaillée par rapport aux contraintes budgétaires du programme en Septembre 2008. En attendant, des recherches exploratoires continuent pour certains de ces thèmes.
