Professor Ton Dietz holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Environmental Sciences and received an honorary doctorate of Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya, in 2007.
Ton Dietz has been professor of human geography at the University of Amsterdam since 1995 and became Director of the African Studies Centre in 2010 (www.ascleiden.nl); he is also Professor of the Study of African Development at Leiden University.
From 2002 until 2007 he was (part-time) Professor of Social Sciences, Utrecht University and scientific director of CERES, Research School for Resource Studies for Development. He chairs the CoCooN programme of the Dutch research funding agency NWO (Conflict and Cooperation over Natural Resources) and is a member of International Development Publications, publisher of www.thebrokeronline.eu. He is a member of the Worldconnectors (www.worldconnectors.nl).
Ton Dietz was the coordinator for Kenya at the Tracking Development project from 2010 till 2012.

He now co-leads with André Leliveld the Islands of state effectiveness and African agriculture research stream of the ‘Initiating and Sustaining Developmental Regimes in Africa' project funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
